Notice to EBSCOhost Users:

  • Minimum browser requirements for EBSCOhost databases are now Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, Netscape 7.0 or higher, or Firefox 1.0. Macintosh users need to use Safari 1.0.2, Netscape 7 or Firefox 1.0. If you are using an older browser, you can EBSCOhost's Text Only search interface. A link to EBSCOhost's Text Only site can be found in the description for the database.

General Tips

  • Home access requires a valid St. Louis County Library card and residence within the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. A Library card that has expired or has excessive fines applied to it cannot be used to access Library databases from home. Please contact your local St. Louis County Library branch if you have any questions about the status of your Library card.

  • "Browser must be able to accept cookies." Please check to be sure you have your browser set up to accept cookies.

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options > Privacy tab. If you see a slide bar, move it down for the lowest level of privacy, to "Accept all cookies." It should not be set at "Block All Cookies" or Medium."

In Netscape, go to Edit > Advanced (double-click on it). On lower half of screen, choose "Accept all cookies."

  • If you have bookmarked the site or added it to "Favorites," make sure you are linking to the St. Louis County Library home page at http://www.slcl.org. You can get to the list of Library databases by clicking on Electronic Resources > Databases.

If you are using a browser other than Internet Explorer, such as, AOL's browser:

  • Access your browser from the desktop - do not use the browser supplied by AOL or any other Internet Service Provider, as it can result in this error message.

  • If you are an AOL user and are using another browser to access the Library's subscription databases you will have to clear the Cookies and temporary files collected by your browser and by the AOL browser. You can clear the AOL browser going to the Web site you have problems and reloading the page. To reload the page in AOL just hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard while clicking the reload button (curved arrow located next to the address bar) on the AOL tool bar [ CTRL + Reload ].

Special instructions for Internet Explorer users:

  • Sometimes Internet Explorer's Content Advisor will block access to a Web page. The Content Advisor is a feature of Internet Explorer that reads ratings assigned to Web site based on the content of the site. The rating system is strictly voluntary, it does not apply to all Web site on the Internet. More details about the Content Advisor and the ratings system are available on the Internet Content Rating Association site.

To disable Content Advisor:

  • Click on the Windows Start button, select Settings > Control Panel.

  • In the Control Panel, double-click on Internet Options

  • Click on the Content tab. If you see a button labeled "Enabled" then the Content Advisor is already disabled --try another tip on this page. BUT if the button is labeled "Disabled" click on it.

  • You will be prompted for the Content Advisor password. Enter the password you created when the Content Advisor was first enabled.

  • Click OK

  • Close and restart your browser.
