Branch History

The first Rock Road Branch opened for public use on December 7, 1957 in a building that had been constructed as a neighborhood movie house. It had an unusual design with a high peaked roof that sloped at different angles to frame a facade of brick and glass. Its life as the La Cosa Theater was a short one, and it was a dark, vacant building when St. Louis County Library was searching for a site for its first regional branch.

Library officials were especially attracted to its accessible location. The property was purchased in 1956 for $304,000 and the building completely renovated before opening as a library.
