Review of Findings:
Census Verification Project 1910 St. Louis City & St. Louis County,
Missouri Federal Census |
-
Change of E.D. Arrangement
The E.D.s listed on each film were always found on
that film, but the order in which the E.D.s appeared were not necessarily
in correct order. All 13 revised film labels now show the changed E.D.
arrangement listing the E.D.s in the order in which they appear on the
film and the notation "Revised April
2000".
-
Correction of County Film
Marked City
Roll 810, previously labeled as
"St. Louis (city) (E.D.s 112-131) and Ste. Genevieve Counties"
did not actually contain St. Louis City listings. The verification process
found that the St. Louis E.D.s 112-131 were actually for St. Louis County, not
St. Louis City.

Use of Volume Numbers
When a county or independent city has multiple rolls of film for a given
census year, it is helpful if the researcher can look at their miracode or Soundex
listing and from that determine which roll of film should contain the
full census for that household. Many multi-volume counties or cities do not
have their E.D.s running in consecutive numerical order within a roll or
between rolls, so adding the volume number(s) to a film label is a major
help for researchers, especially beginners.
Many
researchers cannot tell the difference between the miracode listings for St.
Louis County and St.
Louis City, so for 1910 St. Louis census films, it is the volume number that pinpoints
the specific roll of film to check. To help clarify the precise roll of film
to check, the volume number information has been
included on all the revised 1910 St. Louis film box labels.
This census verification project also found that the 1910 Missouri federal
census for St. Louis City and for St. Louis County both contained E.D.s numbered 97-132.
This
was not out of the ordinary because St. Louis City and St. Louis County have been
two independent entities since 1876. However, the existence of duplicate
E.D.s does create confusion, and, short of a quick lesson on the history and
geography of St. Louis County, it is the volume number that clarifies which
roll of film to check.
It is the hope of St. Louis County Library and
the St. Louis Genealogical Society Library Volunteers that carrying out this
project and sharing the results will help researchers using the 1910 St. Louis
City or St. Louis County federal census films. If you have tried before to find
a 1910 St. Louis person and were unsuccessful, now is the time to try again!
