This name index was created by volunteer Michael McDermott and by staff of the Special Collections Department. The records to which this index refers are found on the microfilm – Lutheran Church Records Roll 70 – at Special Collections, St. Louis County Library and photocopies of the documents indexed here are available. See the detailed descriptive roll list on this website for the department's holdings for St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Des Peres.

Introduction
First founded as the "German Evangelical Congregation of Des Peres" in 1838, the pastor serving this community came from Holy Ghost Church in St. Louis City. In 1846–1847 the congregations split. (For early records, see Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church, Evangelical Church Finding Aid.) Offshoots of this congregation were formed in 1874, with Concordia Lutheran in Kirkwood, and in 1875, with St. John's in Ellisville.

Understanding Baptism Entries

The baptisms indexed here cover the years 1849–1904 and may give quite detailed information in German, sometimes including the towns of origin of the parents and occupations. They are arranged by the baptismal year and the column headings on each page are as follows:

  • No. (Number): Order in which the baptism was done. Baptisms are numbered each year, beginning with the number one and continuing through the rest of the calendar year.
  • Geburt (Birth): Actual date of birth. In most cases it is close to the date of baptism, but in some cases they may be years apart.
  • Taufe (Baptism): Date that the baptism was performed.
  • Name (Name): First and middle names of the child.
  • Vater (Father): Father’s first name and surname.
  • Mutter (Mother): Mother’s first name and maiden name.
  • Pathen (Godparents): The names of the godparents are listed here.

To locate a baptism one needs only the year and number of the baptism (listed as order # in column 5).

Understanding Death Entries
The deaths indexed here cover the years 1851–1891 and may give varied information in German. Often the maiden name of the deceased or of the spouse is given and if they are from outside the Des Peres area, a place name may be given.
The column headings for the death records are as follows:

  • No.: The order in which the death is recorded for that year.
  • Todestag: the date of death.
  • Begrδbnisstag: burial date
  • Todesursache: cause of death
  • Der Verstorbene: the deceased
  • Die Hinterlassenen: mourners
  • Pastor (Bemerkungen): pastor (remarks)
